Amanda Foister OBE:
Hypnotherapist
My path to becoming an experienced therapist in the Thames Valley grew from nearly 20-years at Longridge Activity Centre, where I witnessed the transformative power of supportive relationships. I had the pleasure of working with a wonderfully diverse team, as well as young people and their families. I saw how creating a nurturing environment allowed people to discover their true potential. Through my work with young people and their families I saw time and time again how providing the right support at the right time created positive change across generations.
This experience showed me that everyone has the capacity to flourish when given the right support and understanding. I raised my two daughters as a lone parent, working full-time — an experience I survived (as did they) but I wish I’d had a bit more help on my journey and once they moved onto their grown-up lives I floundered for a while. I’ve always had an interest in mental health, having completed a psychology degree, all of these insights came together to inspire me to train as a therapist.
My approach combines proven therapeutic strategies both CBT and talking therapies with the power of hypnotherapy, creating a space for healing and growth that is as compassionate as it is transformative. I am also a trained Equine Therapist, using the power of horses to create transformation. Sessions are structured to move at your pace, providing you with an environment that values authenticity, trust, and empowerment.
I am registered with the National Hypnotherapy Society, Prince’s Trust, and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. I am enrolled in the Chrysalis CPD programme so I am constantly expanding my understanding. My supervisor has worked in the mental health field for 30 years, having herself previously been an NHS practitioner.

MY JOURNEY
My journey of conscious self-inquiry began in my teens, when a significant bereavement left me searching for life’s deeper meaning. The loss was sudden and profound, leading me to question: what is the purpose of life when it can be so fragile? Why do we all suffer, regardless of our circumstances? These questions became the foundation of a lifelong commitment to healing, understanding, and inner exploration.
Throughout my twenties, I explored numerous healing modalities—tai chi, acupuncture, homeopathy, Chua Ka fascial release, and Rolfing. Like many on the healing path, I felt called to learn the practices that had helped me most profoundly, leading me to study Shiatsu with some of the era’s most respected teachers and practice professionally from 1990 to 1994. Alongside bodywork, I explored the landscape of my mind through psychotherapy, working with self-facilitated peer groups and exceptional one-to-one therapists. My driving force remained constant: to know myself.
TRAINING & TEACHERS
In my 30s, inspired by my mother’s yoga practice, I began my own journey on the mat. What started as exploration evolved into daily practice and, by 1999, into teaching. I completed my BWY diploma (2000-2003), studied in Rishikesh, and trained with teachers including Angela Farmer, Victor van Kooten, Donna Farhi, and Sandra Sabatini. I deepened my practice through anatomy studies with Gary Carter, developmental movement with Linda Hartley, and the teachings of the Scaravelli tradition. I committed to daily meditation practice in 2007 and in 2011-12 had a life-changing experience spending time in the jungle in Nepal with an extraordinary guru.
In 2015, I discovered Swami Sivananda Radha’s teachings through a book in my local library and immediately knew I needed to study at Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia. The three-month Yoga Development Course I completed there in 2016 marked a profound deepening of my practice, opening new dimensions of self-inquiry through the ashram’s unique approach to yoga as a spiritual practice. I returned for specialized training in Dream and Kundalini Yoga (2017) and the Hidden Language of Hatha Yoga (2018, recertified 2024), each deepening my understanding of how yoga serves as a mirror for inner exploration.
DREAM YOGA & MEDITATION
Dreams have always been a profound source of insight and inspiration in my life. My training in Dream Yoga taught me to work with the symbols and images the dreaming mind presents, unlocking information about the subconscious that provides support for everyday life. Dreams often reveal solutions to real-life challenges, illuminate blind spots we can’t see consciously, and connect us to a sense of meaning and purpose.
In 2021, I experienced a life-changing dream in which I saw the face of a Tibetan lama in a Himalayan monastery. Just a couple of weeks later, 500 miles from home, following an incredible thread of synchronicities, I walked down a forest track and discovered a Buddhist retreat center—when I researched it online, there was the face of the lama from my dream. This extraordinary experience led me to meet my current meditation teacher in person and begin following his teachings. I continue to travel to his centers in Nepal and worldwide, deepening my practice with him. Through my direct experience of the transformative power of dreams, I find great joy in helping others explore their dreaming minds and uncover the insights and messages within.
